About Us


The Foundation for PIHMA Research & Education was incorporated in Phoenix on February 23, 2001.The nonprofit was intended to provide support and funding for scholarships, research, library, medical clinics, education and charitable assistance to the general public. Designed as a nonprofit partner to the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture (PIHMA) which was established in 1996, the Foundation received federal tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) on January 22, 2004, and was later confirmed as a public charity on May 2, 2006.  Together, with PIHMA, the Foundation seeks to bring greater awareness of and support in Asian and traditional medicines to the public.

Since that time, the Foundation formed the National Library of Traditional Medicine (www.nloftm.org) to house and manage collections from several colleges, including PIHMA and the American Medical College of Homeopathy (AMCH).

Most recently, the Foundation expanded its research capabilities with the assumption of the nonprofit Institutional Research Board (IRB) in homeopathy and the Non-Governmental Organization(NGO) of AMCH (which was acquired by PIHMA in 2015). The IRB and NGO were since expanded to include acupuncture research and activities. The Foundation conducts research in acupuncture, homeopathy and for other projects.

The Foundation’s activities are managed by the Board of Directors, led by Dominick Grillas, and includes Dan Bedgood, L.Ac, Todd Rowe, Paul Sugar, and Cristina Whitehawk.  Fundraising events include the Celebrity Chef Fundraiser, and the Author’s Series at the National Library of Traditional Medicine.

Dan Bedgood, MSOM, Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM), L.Ac.

Dan Bedgood is a military veteran, former IBM executive auditor, and bodyworker who later became a cum laude graduate of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, in San Diego, California. Subsequently, he established a private practice in Florida specializing in Geriatrics and Pediatrics. Dan was a member of the Association of Teachers of Chinese Medicine and the Florida Toyohara Association. He is a former faculty member of the Academy of Chinese Healing Arts and the Sarasota School of Natural Healing Arts. Dan has been a longtime faculty member and clinic supervisor at the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture since 1989, where he also served as Dean of Students and Institutional Development Officer. Dan has an extensive history of community service at PIHMA, leading to a graduation award named in his honor for community service. Dan regularly gives public presentations and volunteers at events, demonstrating his skills and the practice of Oriental medicine. In addition to teaching and supervising clinic, he maintains a private practice.

Dominick Grillas, Founder and Managing Partner of Impestra LLC

Dominick Grillas advises leaders and executives on strategy execution, portfolio management and enterprise performance and transformation.

Dominick started his career with “big 10” firms Cap Gemini, Keane and Wipro, leading offers and business ventures in Europe and North-America or driving worldwide transformations with domestic companies and international corporations in Financial Services, healthcare, CPG Manufacturing, Aerospace and Retail.

Author of numerous white papers, articles and field manuals, Dominick has re-written a large part of the management consulting toolkit, leveraging years of experience into a field-tested set of tools and frameworks. He helps local and global executives and companies refine and anchor their vision into their organization, reduce variability and increase the performance of their strategic Portfolios. He created a 360 degree Enterprise Performance Momentum toolset and developed metrics and updated best practices for Inbound and Content Marketing.

A graduate of the University of Bordeaux (France) and of The Boston University School of Management, with numerous professional certifications, Dominick has been helping organizations around the world including several Fortune 500 companies. He has been continuously involved with non-profit and NGO organizations, as an active member and a Board member, with contributions including strategic planning, forecasting, fund-raising, events, marketing and organizational structure.

Paul Sugar

Paul Sugar

Paul Sugar, is the founder and Director of the Scottsdale Institute for Health and Medicine. Paul completed the advanced MBSR teacher training in 1994 at the Center for Mindfulness pioneered by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and is a Certified MBSR instructor through the Center for Mindfulness at the UCSD School of Medicine. In addition, he is a Mentor for the MBSR certification candidates there. He has taught over 80- 8 week MBSR and MBCT programs and has delivered hundreds of mindfulness based workshops for over 20 years .He has taught mindfulness in the health care, corporate, academic, sports and private sectors. Paul has been practicing and teaching meditation, yoga and tai chi for over 40 years. Paul’s MBSR classes offer nursing, acupuncture and bodyworker CEU. Continuing education credits are also accepted by a number of other professional organizations. In 1998 Paul created the Attention Academy school program which became a seminal study for the development of mindfulness in the schools. He has also spearheaded a number of mindfulness based research studies in the healthcare field.  In his role as a business entrepreneur he is a health care management professional, has founded and operated a number of highly successful service related businesses in the healthcare field and serves on the Board of Directors of three mindfulness based non profit organizations. Beyond combining management, financial, and marketing skills to maximize the growth of these organizations, Paul has applied the principles of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Peak Performance to create a uniquely effective business model.


Cristina Whitehawk

Cristina Whitehawk of Whitehawk and Associates, is CEO (Chief Empowerment Officer) and Founder of Powered by Geniusä, which teaches how to use the brain to consciously change one’s life and deliberately create change with programs that combine the power of the mind with the wisdom of the body to create optimal brain function. She has worked with corporations and entrepreneurs, families and children, and taught a wide variety of classes in addition to individual coaching.   Cristina has 30+ years of experience in the field of human spiritual development and brings a focused commitment to providing new perspectives for accessing human potential. Licensed since 1989 as a certified Brain Gymâ instructor and practitioner of other brain optimization techniques, she works with others to capitalize on the neuroplasticity of the brain and harness previously untapped inner resources by using the brain-sypecific movements and processes to facilitate accomplishment of goals. She is also an author of “Doorways to Daily Soul Nurturance: A Book for Daily Inspirational Focus”, based on her use of these approaches. She has served on the Governing Board of Brain Gym International, as adjunct faculty for Prescott College Adult Degree Programs in Prescott, AZ, as a United Way Impact Spending volunteer and as a founding member of Arizona Association of Facilitators. She is a former Governing Board Member for the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture College & Clinic in Phoenix, AZ, where in 2004 she received their Most Honorable Service Award.  As a Governing Board member of Foster Angels of Arizona Serving Together she trained their volunteers for their Kids Learn FAAST tutoring program. Cristina serves as personal counsel to business executives through her Executive Focus™ program, now serves on the Foundation for PIHMA Research & Education Board.


Todd Rowe MD, MD(H), CCH, DHt

Dr. Todd Rowe is the past president and a founder of the American Medical College of Homeopathy. He is a licensed homeopathic physician who has been practicing homeopathy for more than 20 years and has a part time practice in classical homeopathy. He is certified by the American Board of Homeotherapeutics and the Council for Homeopathic Certification. He has been a doctor of medicine since 1984 and a graduate of Rush Medical School, Chicago, Illinois. He completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Vermont in 1988 and achieved Board Certification in Psychiatry in 1992. He completed his homeopathic training at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Albany, CA. Dr. Rowe teaches extensively. He is the president of the American Medical College of Homeopathy. He supervises homeopathic students and trains medical students and residents in classical homeopathy. He has published several distance learning courses designed to help prepare physicians for first aid and acute prescribing, as well as preparing for homeopathic licensing exams. He has written several books on homeopathic education, including Homeopathic Methodology, The Homeopathic Journey and Choosing a Career in Homeopathic Medicine. Dr. Rowe is the director of the Society for the Establishment of Research in Classical Homeopathy. He has conducted numerous provings, mostly focusing on local flora and fauna. He has recently published a book called Desert Medicine: A Homeopathic Exploration.

Aniko Pinter, MLS

Aniko Pinter is a librarian at the National Library of Traditional Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona, and head of research for Minted Prose, a New York City based publishing company. She holds a BA in Political Science from Hunter College of CUNY, and a Masters degree in Library Science from Queens College of CUNY. Aniko served as the librarian at the American Hungarian Library and Historical Society in New York City while engaged with major law firms as a library research assistant. In addition to maintaining the collection at the Hungarian Library, she spearheaded cultural events.

Jianying He MD (China), PhD

Dr. He, is a NIH trained clinical researcher. Her research focus on insulin resistance, inflammation, obesity, atherosclerosis, diabetes and metabolic disorders. She is currently helping Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture with their clinical research on herbs and acupuncture and providing evidence based reports. She does statistics, protocol design, grant application. She also serves in the IRB team as a member. Her former years of experiences working as an internist and endocrinologist in her home country help her fully understand all the hormone system in the body. Together with her training in Chinese Medicine, Dr. Jianying He truly integrates Western medicine and Eastern Medicine. Dr. Jianying He is accomplished with a number of publications.

David Farren,  JD

Dave Farren

David is a member of the litigation team at Jaburg Wilk and works in employment, antitrust, insurance coverage and commercial litigation. He has numerous years of experience representing clients ranging from small business to major corporations. One such client is a movie theater chain with theatres throughout the Southwest. As lead counsel for the client, David represented them in a both a complex and very successful antitrust litigation that spanned many years. It involved numerous federal court decisions and published opinions, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision that established new law in the Ninth Circuit regarding an antitrust standing issue.  He has also been involved in numerous other complex and sometimes high-profile cases. One such case was a defamation action he filed against Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy, who, David alleged, had libeled David’s client on Liddy’s nationally syndicated radio talk show. David currently continues to represent clients in complex matters but also specializes in commercial dispute resolution and employment law. David has briefed cases for appellate court and has been successful in resolving cases through motions practice.  When appropriate, he is also successful in case resolution through mediation and settlement negotiations.In addition to his legal work, David is a founding member of the Arizona State Acupuncture Board, a former member of the Arizona State Foster Care Review board and an instructor at Rio Salado Community College.  He is a frequent author and speaker on legal topics.

Fred Lockhart


Mr. Fred Lockhart has served as the Executive Director of the Arizona Private School Association for the past 18 years. APSA has been the recognized voice of Private Postsecondary Education in our state since 1967.

He has served as a featured presenter at a variety of educational conferences around the country. Fred has served the Private Postsecondary Sector for the past 30 years in various capacities from Classroom Instructor to College President. His lifelong commitment to Higher Education in our sector and his passion for learning are the driving forces of his continued success.

Catherine Niemiec, JD, LAc


Catherine Niemiec, J.D., L.Ac., is the President/CEO and Founder of the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture. After her studies (University of Arizona, University of California-Hastings), she practiced law in California and also served as director for a national legal education company specializing in bar exam preparation. She became a Certified Practitioner of Chinese Herbology, through the residency program at the Institute of Chinese Herbology in Oakland, California. She co-authored Arizona’s acupuncture law that was enacted in 1998. She served as President of the Arizona Consortium of Complementary Healing Organizations, Chair of Arizona’s Acupuncture Board of Examiners’

Subcommittee on Preceptorships, and is Founder & President Emeritus of the Arizona Society of Acupuncture and Arizona Society of Oriental Medicine & Acupuncture. She served 5 years as Vice-President of the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (CCAOM) and was a representative to the National Education Dialogue and the Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Healthcare (ACCHAC). She served as Chair and Commissioner for the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), and continues to serve as a Site Visitor. She is also the Founder of the Foundation for PIHMA Research & Education, a nonprofit organization dedicated to education, research, foundations and scholarships, and nonprofit integrative medical clinics.

Sonny Cave‘s professional career spans 20 years of broad legal and business experience, including working for more than 10 years within the semiconductor industry. Mr. Cave currently serves as the Senior  Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer of ON Semiconductor Corporation headquartered in  Phoenix, Arizona. global supplier of advanced semiconductors for sophisticated electronics application within the portable, wireless, computing, consumer, networking, automotive, and industrial end-product markets. It has major sales and operations in the Americas,
Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. Mr. Cave earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Colorado Law School in 1985. He also holds a Master of Science degree in  Botany from Arizona State  University (1982) and a Bachelor of Science degree inBotany, cum laude, from Duke University (1979).

Cherylanne Devita, PhD


Cherylanne DeVita, Ph.D. is President and CEO of DeVita International, Inc. She holds undergraduate degrees in both Psychology and Microbiology with minors in Chemistry and Physics. Cherylanne’s graduate degrees are in Psychology one of which is a doctorate in Psychology earned in 1988. Cherylanne has worked in the field of Holistic Health since 1978. After leaving traditional medical school in 1981, she co-founded a training program for alternative therapeutic modalities for primary health care practitioners in Arizona.In 1995, Certified Aromatherapy was introduced into the program, specializing in healing essential oils. Soon after that she began working with Organic Aloe Vera to create a range of natural skin care products. In 1999, she formed DeVita Natural Skin Care. In 2012, Devita became certified as a Woman Owned Business, and garner a coveted position on the prestigious Inc.500/5000 Fastest Growing Companies list, ranking No. 2077. This global manufacturing firm, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona offers a variety of holistic cosmetic and health products.
